01December2020 — The Patriotic Piper, Vol. I published ten days ago — things are off to an even better start than I possibly imagined! Some people have cleverly noticed the “Volume 01” in the title — they’re already asking where the other books are, when will they be published, and what will they contain.
This first book was originally only titled “The Patriotic Piper”. When I started the project I began by making a substantial list of tunes along with collecting notation. When considering my collected titles against the scope of the project, I narrowed the list down to the 20 tunes now found in the book.
Me-being-me, I didn’t delete the ‘rejects list’. About a year before finishing the first book, while looking in my original list for some information, I realized what was in front of me: I had the perfect collection needed to make a second book!
Work on book #2 has already begun. The plan for The Patriotic Piper, Vol. II is to feature these additional tunes accompanied by their histories. I may or may-not include recipes — however, if I hear from enough people who want recipes … I’ll do it!
At last check my ‘rejects list’ is around 35 tunes. Some of these titles are under copyright. While I may not include the notation, I don’t believe that stops me from writing the history and providing information on these tunes.
While talking with various people, including some of my SAMS peers, about the first book I realized that I was on to something. There are potentially additional Patriotic Piper books that can form a series, continuing to utilize the same ‘military/patriotic tunes’ idea. At present I have a solid concept for Book #3. The concept for Book #4 is … let’s just say … coming into focus.
